Close to Nature with Safari Elegance.
"The Setting Of Sentinel Is
Sentinel Mara Safari Camp is situated in a prime area of the Masai Mara National Reserve. The Musiara Marsh area renowned for its outstanding game viewing is where both the BBC “Big Cat Diaries” and Disney’s “African Cats” were filmed. You are assured of an excellent game viewing experience. During the annual migration, various crossing points are easily accessible from Sentinel.
The camp itself is set up along the Mara River with wonderful bird life and the private and natural setting ensures that guests have a most enjoyable and authentic experience of the bush. Being on high banks above the Mara River means that there are always hippo and crocodile in the river below to be seen with other animals coming to drink, or cross the river at times.

An Amazing African Adventure with a Wonderful Kenyan Guide
“This was my first trip to Africa as well as my first safari experience. It exceeded my expectations. Peter and his team could not have been more accommodating: both the food and the service were outstanding.
Our day started very early with our guide, Dominick, whose expertise in the savanna brought us to a viewing of the most amazing animals: sleepy mother lions with their lion cubs, herds of elephants, many hippos, zebras and gazelles. A most special treat was encountering a leopard ascending to a tree with its prey. Though watching it feast was not especially “fun”, it was that unique lesson of “survival of the fittest.
The journey of a lifetime! I’ll never forget it!”
The Rave Reviews Are All True!
“Wow-what an awesome experience my wife and I had while spending seven nights at Sentinel Mara! Peter, the camp manager and his staff made us feel welcome from the minute we arrived and by the end of our week, we felt like old friends, as we talked about future visits. We had never been to Africa, nor stayed in a tented camp, so we were unsure what to expect. Our concerns were allayed within minutes as we were escorted to our tent which was spacious and very clean. There was turn-down service every night which included warm water bottles in our bed, a nice touch. Our days began early with a “wake-up greeting” along with coffee and biscuits, brought to our tent exactly when requested.
The meals were excellent as Chef Joshua and his team went out of their way to please with a wide variety of delicious offerings. Later in our week, we met Peter Twycross who also went out of his way to be the perfect host, telling us about his experiences across Africa and sharing some of his delicious wine finds.
In summary – everyone we met was so warm, friendly and genuinely seemed like they could not do enough for us, to make our experience special. Thank you to our new friends at Sentinel Mara.”
Sentinel Mara treats you like family.
“Visiting Sentinel Mara is just like visiting family, and meeting best friends in a luxurious camp experience that is thoughtful, organized, and celebrates the beauty and wonder of The Masai Mara. The meals were fun and more delicious than most meals you could have in the states.
The Sentinel Mara setting on the river is unparalleled, with endless wildlife experiences before your eyes and the Maasai guides are brilliant, thoughtful and so kind to answer any questions.
We left so inspired, rested, rejuvenated, and with so many memories and a deep love for the Mara. Sentinel is so committed to making your experience both comfortable and sharing a memorable and authentic safari experience that’s not to be missed.
Already planning my return trip!!”
Beautiful camp with tons of wildlife
“My husband and I traveled to Sentinel Camp with a large group of friends in late Oct. 2021. We had a fantastic time and I highly recommend this camp. The tents were very large and beautifully appointed. It felt like being on a movie set. The food was very good and the staff was just amazing. They attend to every guest with extreme care and go out of their way to provide an amazing experience. The camp is right in the river where hippos are located at all times of day.
We also saw a giraffe wander through camp. Masai guides lead guests on two game drives a day and the amount of animals we saw was unbelievable. 5 star experience all the way.”
Sentinel Masai Mara
We just had four fabulous nights and didn’t want to leave. This camp has a prime location on the river, where you can watch the hippos. Short drive to see incredible wildlife. The entire staff, is attentive and engaging. They are very knowledgeable about the area, traditions and animal behavior. Our guide for the game drives was exceptional and we were fortunate to see the big 5, plus dozens more. The camp is very eco conscious and tends to your every need. We would highly recommend for anyone traveling to Kenya. We enjoyed every minute we were there and getting to know the staff made for a nice personalized experience. We typically don’t stay in the same place twice on our travels, but this would definitely be one exception.
Hospitality On Steroids
“My friend and I enjoyed a stay at the Sentinel camp for three days in early September. every care was taken to make our stay enjoyable, comfortable, and authentic. The staff was amazing and couldn’t have been more gracious. I would whole heartedly recommend a stay at this camp if you are considering the Maasai Mara experience.”
I wish I could give it 6 stars!
I cannot say enough good things about the Sentinel Mara. We spent 3 nights there and they made us feel like family. The manager Peter was incredible. He greeted us upon arrival, sat at the campfire at night to hear about our day and made sure we were experiencing everything that the Masai Mara had to offer. Chef David’s food would rival any 5 star restaurant in New York City. We never expected such wonderful meals on an African safari! The rest of the staff was incredible, especially Jacob, Sonkoyo and Sammy, as well as the tent attendants and the Masai guides.
Our guide Jonathan was superior and I cannot say enough good things about him! The tents were lovely… true glamping as I imagined it!! Situated on a cliff overlooking a river, there were superb views of hippos, crocodiles, and even some giraffes and elephants right from your front deck. The sentinel Mara was the first of five camps that we stayed in on our visit to Kenya and Tanzania. The only regret I have is that we stayed at this camp first. I truly wish that this had been our last camp because it was by far the best!
Outstanding Eco Camp and Safari
What a delightful first time experience to the Maasai Mara and unbelievable safari experience. Never did we think we would see so many species of animals in one trip. Such unexpected treats while in safari and in the camp. The tents were so well appointed with four poster beds and luxury bedding, divided shower and toilet rooms. Hot and cold showers available upon request.
The meals were prepared by chefs and staff and not only delicious but also very accommodating for guests with special dietary needs. The hosts Peter and Wendy were so welcoming and very attentive to all guests. Try this camp as you will not be disappointed!
Best Kenya Safari Camp In The Mara
“We visited Sentinel in the end of May for the second time . Our luxurious tent overlooked the Mara river where we spent many hours sitting on our little porch in comfortable chairs watching the hippos and listening to the lions. We even got an amazing afternoon with a group of elephants that came to the river to romp. The camp makes every effort to be environmentally responsible and to live lightly on the land. The whole place is powered on solar. And the staff brought us hot water in the morning for washing up and hot showers whenever we requested. Joshua, the camp chef, provided us with one great meal after another and we were very pleased with the many wine choices, which many all inclusive camps don’t offer.
Peter, the camp manager, was exceptional. He was up every morning to see us off on our game drive (even when we left at 4 am for a hot air balloon adventure). He told us lots of wonderful stories (he joined us, at our request, for dinner one night), and he helped us with all of our needs. He was friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable. Dominique was our game guide. He saw animals it was impossible to see, including our most amazing morning when two male lions and one female rejoined a group of females they had been apart from. We got to see the whole display as the males walked slowly down a hill toward the females with the females watching, never letting go of eye contact. Dominique described exactly what was happening as the two groups accepted each other. We had a morning safari breakfast on a breathtaking part of the river with elephants grazing nearby and crocs sunning themselves on the banks. We had sundowners on a hill overlooking the plains. Everyone was especially friendly and kind to our ten year old and she loved every minute of the trip. We have been to many camps over the years and this is definitely one we will return to again and again when we visit the Mara.”
Best Safari Ever!
“We stayed at the Sentinel Mara, and August is a great time to be there for the migration. Our guides for the 5 days were Dominick and Peter. They were amazing at instinctively finding the animals. The first day we saw a leopard in the tree with her kill. This is tent camping (glamping) above a river with hippos and crocs. The camp is all about being eco-friendly so is run on solar. It does have electricity to plug in devices and internet but only in the common camp tents next to the dining tents. The rooms had no outlets and low lighting but it was not inconvenient at all. The beds were so comfortable with indoor toilets and showers. We were in Tent 1, which was next to the bush so every night the hippos would bellow loudly and the elephants would graze right outside our tent. I finally used ear plugs to sleep better as I am a light sleeper but we were truly living among the animals. We were told to never leave our tents at night and the Askari would patrol all night and shoo away all the animals from our tent.
When it was dark in the morning and evening, we would ring a cowbell and the Askari would come to escort us with flashlights safely to our meals. The food was amazing and everyone at the camp was extremely friendly. Before dinner, they would build a campfire and serve drinks and snacks. Their dinners were gourmet. After the morning drives, they would cook us omelettes and potatoes and bacon plus delicious homemade baked goods. One morning after the drive they set a table out in the bush and brought a beautiful breakfast and mimosas to us. A wonderful man named James would come and fill up our water tanks with hot water for showers and deliver hot coffee and cookies to our tent before our morning drives. Each day we took a 3-4 hour morning drive and a 3-4 hour afternoon drive. We saw everything, herds and herds of elephants, many prides of lions, hippos, crocs, every antelope imaginable and the river crossing of thousands of wildebeest. The most important thing was the knowledge of our guides, who educated us on how to id all the animals, their behaviors and mating habits. We learned so so much and we always felt safe! The owners, Peter and Wendy, could not have been more responsive and accommodating. It was truly a safari experience that was authentic and amazing. I can’t wait to return!”
First Visit To The Mara
“This was my first visit to the Mara and we could not have chosen a better place to stay. The camp is located on the banks of the river with a view of hippos, crocs and the odd elephant or giraffe in the evening coming for a drink. The rooms are clean and have all the conveniences. Really enjoyed sitting outside the tent and listening to the sounds of nature. The staff were friendly, professional and always helpful. There’s a really great chef on site and I really enjoyed all meals provided.
The camp is really strategically placed for animal and bird viewing. We didn’t have to drive far to see the animals. We got to see elephants, a couple of lions, lots of gazelles and Zebra’s just a couple of minutes ride from the camp. We also had a full day game drive that saw us on the banks of sand river where we got to see a herd of wildebeest cross over. Peter, the owner, is a pleasant man , takes time to know his guests and offers a wealth of knowledge about the Maasai Mara in general. Also if you are like me and cannot stay completely unconnected there’s really great WiFi at the camp.
Last but not least, I love the fact that Sentinel is an Eco-camp. We need to show more diligence in caring for the environment and leave little to no impact when we visit the animals in their natural habitat.”
Trip Of A Lifetime
“This place made my Kenya vacation a “trip of a lifetime”. Understated, tasteful luxury, relaxed atmosphere, delicious food, expert guides. Nothing to improve. Every small detail was attended to, from the organic shampoo to the comfy mattresses. The manager, Peter, made sure that we were well cared for and the result was a profound relaxation, easy smiles, and the shock and awe of all the safari has to offer. Our guide, Johnathan, knew the area well and was able to position the car for optimum epic photos when, for example, the filtered rays of sunset illuminated a lion on a hill.
If you are considering this place, just do it.”
