Close to Nature with Safari Elegance.

"The Setting Of Sentinel Is

Sentinel Mara Safari Camp is situated in a prime area of the Masai Mara National Reserve. The Musiara Marsh area renowned for its outstanding game viewing is where both the BBC “Big Cat Diaries” and Disney’s “African Cats” were filmed. You are assured of an excellent game viewing experience. During the annual migration, various crossing points are easily accessible from Sentinel.

The camp itself is set up along the Mara River with wonderful bird life and the private and natural setting ensures that guests have a most enjoyable and authentic experience of the bush. Being on high banks above the Mara River means that there are always hippo and crocodile in the river below to be seen with other animals coming to drink, or cross the river at times.

High Luxury Low Impact

“Our family recently had the privilege of realizing a life long dream to visit Africa this past June. We have family living in Nairobi who had previously stayed with Sentinel and recommended them to us for our first safari experience and they were happy to return as well! From the moment we arrived, Sentinel and their staff surpassed our every expectation. Every detail was perfection, the staff attentive to our every need, the cuisine impeccable and our guide gave us the thrill of a lifetime. What sets Sentinel apart is old school luxury combined with a dedicated stewardship of the environment. You have all the comforts (plush accommodations, wifi and charging stations in the lounges, flush toilets, showers, hot water and electricity) made possible through sustainable measures (solar power) and a non permanent footprint. The camp blends seamlessly into its surroundings, offering the unique experience of living among the wildlife. I appreciated Sentinel’s dedication to sustainability and conservation while providing their guests with best in class service. This is the camp of the future.

Planning & Reservations
Booking could not have been easier or smoother. All our questions, back and forth emails on dates and availability were answered promptly and in detail. They were gracious enough to help arrange separate payment portals so family members could pay their individual fees and get those coveted credit card miles. Payment was simple and secure, alleviating the stress that can come with overseas transactions.

Sentinel reservations handled booking our round trip flights from Nairobi and included the fee in the booking – another weight off our shoulders! Upon arrival, we were greeted with the friendly smile of our dedicated guide for our stay, Dominic. We were able to see some elusive wildlife on our way to camp from the airstrip which set the stage for what became one of my most profound travel experiences. Arriving at camp, we were greeted by the gracious camp manger Peter and Sentinel staff with cold scented towels to refresh us after our journey. Peter provided us with a detailed briefing and camp tour which helped settle us in and put us in the right mind frame to get the most out of our stay.

Sentinel camp is situated on a bluff above the Mara river and it’s multiple hippo inhabitants that provide non stop entertainment. This is an intimate camp with 8 tents discreetly blended into the surrounding marsh and well spaced from each other for maximum privacy. Furnishings in both private tents and lounges are plush, comfortable and exude old Hollywood glamour. There are several lounge tents where I enjoyed many a cold drink thanks to the meticulous attention of stewards Sonkoyo & Jacob who were always on hand to provide refreshment and knowledge of our surroundings. Lounge tents are where you can charge any electronics and Wifi was solid, although we tried to unplug as much as possible. The mess tent where we had our meals has a fantastic view of the river and Mara Triangle, where we were lucky enough to catch some elephants joining the hippos during lunch. Evenings after game drives we enjoyed sitting around the campfire to chat with manager Peter and other guests to share what we’d experienced, have a cocktail and wind down from another amazing day. I was escorted to my tent from sunset to sunrise by my dedicated Askari Tony who made sure I was safe. My friendly tent stewards James and Jonathan ensured my comfort throughout my stay. They seamlessly provided hot water for my sink both morning and night and showers upon request. It was a thrill each night falling asleep in my mosquito enclosed bed with hot water bottle and listening to the hippos, lions, and hyena begin their chorus. Wake up calls for the next morning are confirmed each night and you are gently prodded to life with coffee or tea the way you like it and yummy biscuits delivered to your tent. When you’re ready to head to the main lounge for morning game drive, just ring the cowbell and your Askari will be ready to escort you.

We loved chef David! Don’t think you’ll be losing any weight during your stay, the food is plentiful and beautifully prepared. We had coffee and biscuits during our morning game drives and would return to a late breakfast with made to order eggs, pastries and fresh fruit. Lunches were lighter fare with fresh salads and a main which was perfect. We thoroughly enjoyed our sundowners on our evening game drives, Dominic always having a fully stocked bar and cooler with drinks on hand. Dinners are a lavish affair, best save room. Chef David sets the scene around the campfire and we loved his expositions on life before diving into the night’s menu. The quality of our meals was 5 star with expertly paired wines. Service from Jacob and Sonkoyo was outstanding and we never had an empty glass for long! Chef David and team provided us with a pre-packed bush breakfast one morning to allow us a longer game drive and on our last morning the entire camp set up an al fresco brunch along the river complete with mimosas and made to order omelettes. Truly a highlight of our stay.

The Game Drives
You come here to see wildlife and we won the lottery with our guide Dominic. Dominic has a deep knowledge of the area, the animals and their behavior that he was gracious to share with us. No matter if we were first or most recent vehicle on scene, Dominic was able to get us closer to the action than we had ever dreamed. He has a preternatural ability to know what an animal is going to do and lined us up to be in the best position to observe the action without ever being disrespectful to the animals themselves. We were able to spend as much time as we wanted watching and waiting to see the animal to animal interaction instead of rushing off to find the next one. He clearly has the respect of other drivers and rangers, and we trusted him completely. Through trusting him, we saw and experienced the most incredible moments like being a part of a herd of elephants and their babies, having a front row seat to “dinner theater” watching Yaya and her grand cubs munch on a zebra while hyena, jackal and vultures waited their turn; got schooled on “dirty hippos” (IYKYK); found a cheetah in the grass after all the other vehicles gave up, and experiencing the ending of a lifetime. Our Nairobi based family had been on multiple safaris and had never seen a leopard, this was their one hope. After not coming across one during the trip, we were resigned that we had been blessed to see so much already. As Dominic drove us towards our last sunset, he veered off into the marsh, slowed down and whispered “Robbi…leopard”. There she was, strutting down the road. Dominic knew she would head for high ground on a nearby log and positioned our vehicle to capture the most incredible view while she posed and posed and posed. There were tears. Dominic made our trip one that changes your life, and on top of that he was a blast to spend this special time with.

All that to say, look no further for the experience of a lifetime than Sentinel. We hope to be back to share this special place with more friends and family. A huge “Asante” to Dominic, Peter, Chef David, Sonkoyo, Jacob, James, Jonathan and Tony for showing us Kenya in all her glory.”

Incredible and magical! Unforgettable

“This small camp is magical. I highly recommend it if you are looking for an experience that is both authentic and magical, in the heart of the Masai Mara. The food is very tasty there. Breakfast in the middle of the park, magical. The staff are lovely. The manager Peter is absolutely delightful and very efficient. The location of the camp is truly amazing and this view!!! Unforgettable. I highly recommend it and already dream of going back!”

Best Service Ever

“I was beyond impressed with my experience here. They took care of every aspect possible and we’re all very polite. When we went to bed there were heat packs in our bed to ensure it was warm and would always offer us drinks and the service at meal times was phenomenal. I have never felt so safe and cared for. They had guards who would walk us back and forth between the base and our tents after sunset and before sunrise. It is an amazing set up and gives you a in the bush experience while providing the luxuries of being pampered. The camp is situated right beside the water and hippos. The tour guides are all very good drivers and have so much in depth knowledge of all the animals and the ins and outs of the Mara!! I would 110% go again and recommend to anyone! A very well worth trip!!
Thank you to everyone who served while we were there❤️❤️❤️❤️”

I was part of a group of 7 women who stayed at Sentinel Mara for 4 nights back in Sept 2021. It was PERFECT!! From the amazing staff, to the service and food, to the daily safari drives, to the Masai Mara people and our accommodations, it was unforgettable. They even put together a special birthday celebration for some of our group. We honestly did not want to leave. We talk about going back with more family as soon as we can. Thank you Sentinel for the most amazing part of our trip.

Amazing Experience

“By far the best safari experience I have had. Everything was perfect, everyone at the camp is super prepared and helpful. The camp itself is in a wonderful location and is set up really well. What sets it apart from all other experiences I have had on safari is their best in class service. I was blown away by how well we were taken care of, every single staff member made us feel right at home! I don’t think I can go anywhere else in the mara after having been here… Hope to return soon!”

Excellent for families – we can’t wait to go back!

“We had the most amazing time with the Sentinel team in Dec. 2021. We were a group of 7 including 3 teenagers and everyone had a wonderful, memorable time.

The guides were spectacular, the setting is exquisite, and everyone working at Sentinel was a joy to be around. The food (including the vegetarian fare) was delicious and we saw more wildlife than I had even expected.

They even made is possible for us to go running, which was the most incredible experience.”

A trip of a lifetime!

“One of the greatest vacations of my life! Sentinel far exceeded my expectations. The service and attention to detail was outstanding. The food was delicious and my bed was so comfy. To fall asleep to the sound of the hippos below was something I’ll never forget. Peter, Jonathan, Jacob, Dominic, James, and the other Jonathan, everyone was gracious and kind and I feel we formed lasting friendships. I really hated to leave!”

Incredible stay at a beautiful camp nestled in the forest along the Mara river

“Our family visited Sentinel Mara Camp for 5 nights in December and we were blown away by our experience. From the moment we arrived we were struck by the beauty and setting of the intimate luxury tented camp and were made to feel so special by all who worked there!

The staff at the camp were incredibly attentive and no ask was too much. They were obliging and always ready and willing to assist.

Our accommodation, a beautifully appointed luxury tent, was the perfect sanctuary in which to relax, quiet and set to one side of the camp overlooking the Mara river.

Our guide for the time of our stay was Dominic. He was amazing and had An incredible knowledge of the Mara. He willingly shared insights of the animals, trees, and birds, keeping us constantly engaged and craving more. Notably, Dominic was excellent with our two sons (10 and 8 years of age) always including them and ensuring they were happy! Which they most certainly were!

The food at Sentinel was also excellent. Each meal brilliantly prepared!

Highlights of our stay are numerous but to name a few…
– morning game drives watching the sun rise over the incredible savanna!
– A quiet bush breakfast;
– lazing in the hammock outside our tent listening to the fish eagles call!
-Afternoon tea along the banks of the Mara and of course
– sitting around the camp fire enjoying each other’s stories from the day.

Sentinel Mara Camp was an incredibly special time for us. I’d highly recommend it to anyone wanting to visit the Masai Mara.”

An Amazing African Adventure with a Wonderful Kenyan Guide

“This was my first trip to Africa as well as my first safari experience. It exceeded my expectations. Peter and his team could not have been more accommodating: both the food and the service were outstanding.

Our day started very early with our guide, Dominick, whose expertise in the savanna brought us to a viewing of the most amazing animals: sleepy mother lions with their lion cubs, herds of elephants, many hippos, zebras and gazelles. A most special treat was encountering a leopard ascending to a tree with its prey. Though watching it feast was not especially “fun”, it was that unique lesson of “survival of the fittest.

The journey of a lifetime! I’ll never forget it!”

The Rave Reviews Are All True!

“Wow-what an awesome experience my wife and I had while spending seven nights at Sentinel Mara! Peter, the camp manager and his staff made us feel welcome from the minute we arrived and by the end of our week, we felt like old friends, as we talked about future visits. We had never been to Africa, nor stayed in a tented camp, so we were unsure what to expect. Our concerns were allayed within minutes as we were escorted to our tent which was spacious and very clean. There was turn-down service every night which included warm water bottles in our bed, a nice touch. Our days began early with a “wake-up greeting” along with coffee and biscuits, brought to our tent exactly when requested.

The meals were excellent as Chef Joshua and his team went out of their way to please with a wide variety of delicious offerings. Later in our week, we met Peter Twycross who also went out of his way to be the perfect host, telling us about his experiences across Africa and sharing some of his delicious wine finds.

In summary – everyone we met was so warm, friendly and genuinely seemed like they could not do enough for us, to make our experience special. Thank you to our new friends at Sentinel Mara.”

Sentinel Mara treats you like family.

“Visiting Sentinel Mara is just like visiting family, and meeting best friends in a luxurious camp experience that is thoughtful, organized, and celebrates the beauty and wonder of The Masai Mara. The meals were fun and more delicious than most meals you could have in the states.

The Sentinel Mara setting on the river is unparalleled, with endless wildlife experiences before your eyes and the Maasai guides are brilliant, thoughtful and so kind to answer any questions.

We left so inspired, rested, rejuvenated, and with so many memories and a deep love for the Mara. Sentinel is so committed to making your experience both comfortable and sharing a memorable and authentic safari experience that’s not to be missed.
Already planning my return trip!!”
